LTI's Annual Fall Staff Retreat
On the weekend of October 16th, LTI had its annual retreat at Cape Cod. In addition to serving as a way for new members to get better aquainted with older members and form stronger bonds within the LTI community, this retreat also served as a great way for all of our members to get together and brainstorm new ideas for making this year's LTI the best year yet. Some of the ideas mentioned included different ways to: raise funds, recruit new students, and increase LTI's presence both here at MIT and on other campuses.
A Successful Executive and Mentor Recruitmen
LTI is proud to extend a warm welcome to the following individuals in the following departments of LTI:
2009- 2010 LTI Mentors: Sudha Guttikonda '13, Kenny Lam '13, Ignatius Chen '13, Alyx Daly '13, Anna Dikina '11, Daniel Zheng '11, and Kyle Knoblock '11
2009-2010 LTI Executive Board: Sheila Lee (recruitment chair) '13, Marcela Rodriguez (iLTI chair) '13, Susan Virgem (iLTI chair, community service mentor) '11, Michaela Lavan (recruitment chair for fall, logistics chair for spring) '12.
Student Recruitment
Currently, LTI is hard at work in the student recruitment process. Student Applications and Teacher Recommendations have officially been released! Dozens of different high schools in the greater Boston area have been contacted. Paper applications with brochures have been mailed out to select schools and counselors.
As the November 15th student application deadline approaches, the Public Relations committee has been working on a revised targeting recruitment campaign with a heavy emphasis on technology and science teachers, student government groups, and connections with high school recruitment staff within the greater Boston area.
Mentor Training
While LTI is currently in the phase of recruiting students by mailing out applications and brochures to prospective high school students, the mentors have decided to use this down time as a chance to get ready for the new LTI curriculum. Every Sunday, mentors are learning the art of communication and leadership as well as teaching techniques to more effectively lead discussions and activities with our upcoming 2010 LTI Spring class.
LTI's First Fundraiser
The last week of October featured LTI's first public fundraiser: Halloween Bake Sale! The finance committee raised over $300 in profits from a three-day baked-goods booth in Lobby 10. This fundraiser also increased awareness and publicity for LTI. It also served as a networking opportunity for professors and other resources in the MIT community
